This program serves expectant, adoptive, and teen parents with the goal of providing educational services and childrearing guidance to ensure babies are born healthy and grow into physically, emotionally, and mentally healthy children. It helps parents learn how to better nurture their children, as well. Parents and caregivers are connected to formal and informal supports in the community so children are prepared to start school when they are of age. This program is built on the belief that a parent is their child’s first and most important teacher.
What Is Home Visiting?
This voluntary, free program is intended to promote healthy parent/child relationships. It supports pregnant women and improves pregnancy outcomes. Home visiting serves to strengthen the parent/child bond by building positive parenting practices that promote school readiness. Families learn better ways to promote family stability, and the program helps families access the resources they need to succeed. The program is funded by a grant under the New Mexico Early Childhood Education & Care Department.
Who Is Eligible?
Pregnant mothers with children under the age of 5 are eligible for this program. They must be residents in Lea, Eddy, Chaves, Cibola, Quay, or San Counties. Eligible pregnant women and families with children birth to three in Sandoval, Santa Fe and Torrance counties.
What Do Home Visitors Do?
Presbyterian Medical Services’ Home Visitors are qualified parent educators certified through the nationally recognized, evidence-based Parents as Teachers model. These experts schedule either weekly, bi-monthly, or monthly visits, and developmental assessments occur every 6 months. Home visitors provide developmental activities, education on parenting topics and community resources and referral support as needed.
